Letter from Syria reporting the dismantling of Zayzun electrical power station by terrorist groups

United Nations
Security Council

S/2016/608

Distr.: General
12 July 2016
English
Original: Arabic

Identical letters dated 11 July 2016 from the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council

The armed terrorist groups that control Zayzun electrical power station in Idlib governorate — namely the Nusrah Front, Ahrar al-Sham and other allied groups — have dismantled the machinery and equipment at the power station. Using cranes and large trucks, they have smuggled it to Turkey, where it will be sold in markets as scrap metal.

The Ministry of Electricity has stated that the total capacity of the Zayzun power station is 450 megawatts (combined cycle). It contains high-technology parts currently valued at around $500 million.

I should be grateful if you would have the present letter issued as a document of the Security Council.

(Signed) Bashar Ja'afari
Permanent Representative
of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations
