Letter from Israel regarding the landing in the Golan Heights of an artillery shell fired from Syria on 04Sep16
United Nations
Security CouncilS/2016/765
Distr.: General
7 September 2016
Original: EnglishIdentical letters dated 6 September 2016 from the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council
I am writing to inform you that on Sunday, 4 September, at 1630 hours, a 122-mm artillery shell was fired from Syria into Israeli territory and landed in the El-Foran intersection in the Golan Heights, at UTM 7570/6702. In response, the Israel Defense Forces took defensive actions against the source of the fire.
This is yet another instance of the spillover of the fighting in Syria into Israeli territory. Since the beginning of July 2016, four rockets have landed in Israeli territory, and there have been 29 instances of cross-border shootings into Israel.
I would like to emphasize that Israel reserves the right to act to protect its territory, civilians and interests. Israel has no interest in getting involved in the conflict in Syria, but will not tolerate shooting towards its territory.
Israel demands that the Syrian regime abide by the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement.
I should be grateful if you would have the present letter distributed as a document of the Security Council.
(Signed) Danny Danon
Ambassador
Permanent Representative
