Russian bombers deliver strike at terrorist strongholds in Syria — Defense Ministry
Russian strategic bombers have delivered a strike with cruise missiles at the strongholds of the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist groupings in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
"The air-based cruise missiles were launched from an area above the Mediterranean Sea," it said in a report. "The bombers took off from an airbase on the Russian territory and covered a distance of more than 11,000 km with two refuelings in midair."
The route chosen for the warplanes traversed the airspaces over the water areas of northern seas and eastern Atlantics. After the strike, they returned to their base in Russia.
"The deck-based Sukhoi-33 fighter jets assigned to the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and the strike aircraft deployed on the Hmeymim airbase in Syria engaged in the strike," the report said. "Sukhoi-30 jets did the combat patroling of the operation."
"The Aerospace Force subjected to the strike the terrorists command points, depots with weaponry and munitions, concentations of military hardware, and weaponry plants," the Defense Ministry said.
"Confirmations of the coordinates of all the targets were obtained through several military intelligence channels," the report said. "Drones controlled results of the strikes."
