Kremlin comments on media reports over US "final proposal" on Syria

A Russian-US agreement on a settlement in Syria has not been finalized yet and the search for a compromise on an insignificant number of questions is continuing, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

"It is true that the point at issue is some agreement, some document… that has not been finalized yet, because there have remained some unsettled issues. The work is in progress," Peskov said, commenting on an article in The Washington Post to the effect at the recent meeting between the Russian and US presidents on the sidelines of the G20 summit Russia received some "final proposal" from Washington.

Peskov said that publication did not quite agree with the reality. He confirmed that the Syrian theme was discussed in detail by the two presidents and in still greater detail by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

"It goes without saying that all this (an agreement on Syria) may be discussed only in the form of compromises, and it is for the achievement of that compromise that the work is being conducted. A compromise is still to be achieved on a insignificant number of outstanding issues," Peskov said without elaborating.

Asked about the possibility of a meeting of Russian and US foreign ministers, Peskov said the question should be addressed to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
