Steinmeier: Situation in Aleppo makes understanding between Russia and US more important
The situation in Syria's Aleppo makes mutual understanding between Russia and the United States even more necessary, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement obtained by TASS on Friday.
"Russia, while supporting the Syrian army, bears particular responsibility in this hard situation. That's why we firmly call on Moscow to make the Assad regime introduce a ceasefire regime in Aleppo, cooperate with UN and, together with international aid organizations, make it possible to deliver humanitarian aid to Aleppo residents," Steinmeier said.
"Military escalation is a mistake that will have grave consequences. It pushes back all possibilities for the political settlement of the conflict. The situation in Aleppo makes mutual understanding between the United States and Russia even more important," the foreign minister said. "I hope that current talks between Washington and Moscow will bring results," he concluded.
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Thursday that Russian and Syrian militaries are starting a large-scale humanitarian operation in Aleppo. Four humanitarian corridors will be established there. Civilians will be able to leave Aleppo via three corridors, while one more corridor may be used by militants who wish to lay down arms. The defense minister also ordered to airdrop food, medicaments and necessities to civilians in Aleppo.
