Eighty-two civilians killed in Aleppo within a week - reconciliation center
Eighty-two civilians have been killed and 266 have been wounded in shelling of Syrian Aleppo by Jabhat al-Nusra gunmen in the past seven days, the head of the Russian center for reconciliation of warrying parties, Lieutenant General Sergey Kuralenko said on Monday.
"Jabhat al-Nusra, declared a terrorist organization recognized by the UN Security on May 31, 2013, continues provocations aimed at disrupting the cessation of hostilities regime in the Syrian Arab Republic," Kuralenko said. "Most active combat activity of Jabhat al-Nusra is fixed in Aleppo province," he added.
On April 7 and 8, Jabhat al-Nusra militants took the offensive, seizing two streets of the city. From April 3, terrorist groups of the organization have continued attacks on positions of government troops in the southwestern part of Aleppo province. Repelling the attack, the government troops have destroyed more than 250 terrorists, as well as two tanks and other hardware.
South and west of Aleppo, Jabhat al-Nusra has established full control over groups earlier named among the opposition. Despite measures taken to establish a ceasefire, Jabhat al-Nusra continues attacks on positions of Syrian army in the northern part of Latakia and in the south of Idlib province.
Armed groups of Jabhat al-Nusra try to worsen the humanitarian situation in Aleppo, establishing control over the road connecting Aleppo and Homs. More than 1,500 gunmen have been redeployed from other directions to strengthen the group's forces in the area of Aleppo city.
Jabhat al-Nusra continues concentrating forces in the south and southwest of the city, concentrating there a group of up to 8,000 gunmen.
"Seeking to reduce the number of fatalities among civilians and prevent the destruction of residential buildings and facilities of city infrastructure, the government troops use artillery fire and airstrikes selectively," Kuralenko said.
A ceasefire regime brokered by Russia and the United States on February 22 officially came into effect in Syria at midnight Damascus time on February 27. This does not cover terrorist groups such as Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, both outlawed in Russia, and other groups recognized as terrorist by the United Nations Security Council.
An hour before the ceasefire came into force, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution in support cessation of hostilities in Syria. The document was initiated by Russia and the United States and won support from all the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council.
