Russia's defense ministry says Al-Qaryatyan liberation from IS was unique operation
Russia's defense ministry considers the operation to liberate the Syrian city of Al-Qaryatayn in the Syrian province of Homs from the Islamic State terrorist Group (outlawed in Russia) as unprecedented, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Friday.
"In a period from April 1 to April 3, the Syrian government troops backed by the Russian air group conducted a unique operation to liberate the city of Al-Qaryatyan from Islamic State gunmen," he told a briefing in that city. "At the first stage, units of the Syrian army blocked all roads leading to the city. After that, they staged a storm of the city and by the end of the day completely resumed control of government forces over the city."
The operation, according to Konashenkov, was unique because there was no loss of life among the government army servicemen and self-defense forces.
He said that during the operation in Al-Qaryaryan Russian warplanes flew 54 sorties. As a result, "seven militant control centers, 26 strongholds and gun emplacements, as wells as concentrations of weapons and manpower were hit in more than 30 localities near the city," he said.
The city is now returning to normal life, with locals coming back to their homes after eight months of Islamic State control.
