Seven ceasefire violations reported in Syria in past day — Russian defense ministry

Seven ceasefire violations were reported in Syria in the past day, the Russian center for reconciliation of the warring parties said in its regular information bulletin published on the Russian Defense Ministry's website on Friday.

"The ceasefire regime in Syria has been generally observed. Seven ceasefire violations were reported in the past day (five violations in the province of Latakia, one - in the province of Aleppo and one - in the province of Damascus," the document says.

Gunmen from the Ahram ash-Sham group, which positions itself as opposition, opened mortar and heavy machinegun fire at the settlement of Mazra'at Omaro and Sandran in the province of Latakia.

Positions of the government forces near the settlement of Shmaisa came under mortar fire from the settlement of Zaitundjik.

Gunmen from the Liwa al-Sultan Murad group opened mortar fire at the Sheikh Maksoud quarters from the al-Ashrafia neighborhood. "A number of people were wounded," the bulletin says.

Jaish al-Islam gunmen in the city of Damascus opened mortar fire at residential houses in the As-Sakhiya.

"No air strikes have been delivered by the Russian air group and the Syrian air force at armed opposition group which have declared cessation of hostilities and referred their coordinates to the Russian or US reconciliation centers," the bulletin says.

Two injured as Jabhat al-Nusra open fire in Aleppo

Jabhat al-Nusra militants have opened fire four times on the Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood in Syria Aleppo over the past 24 hours, injuring two civilians, the bulletin published on the Defense Ministry's website says.

"Provocations are continuing by militants of the terrorist organization Jabhat al-Nusra [outlawed in Russia] in the Northwest of Aleppo. The Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood was attacked four times from the Bustan al-Basha area. More than 15 mortar shells and 20 makeshift missiles were fired. Two civilians were injured," the statement runs.

A ceasefire regime brokered by Russia and the United States on February 22 officially came into effect in Syria at midnight Damascus time on February 27. This does not cover terrorist groups such as Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, both outlawed in Russia, and other groups recognized as terrorist by the United Nations Security Council.

An hour before the ceasefire came into force, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution in support cessation of hostilities in Syria. The document was initiated by Russia and the United States and won support from all the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council.
