Damascus comes under shelling on Saturday - Russian ceasefire center

The center set up at the Russian Hmeimim air base with the aim to reconcile the warring sides in Syria reported Damascus' residential areas came under shelling on Saturday, Lieutenant General Sergey Kuralenko, the center's chief, told reporters.

"Today, Russian officers from the negotiations group at the center for reconciliation of the warring sides in the Syrian territory have registered shelling by terrorists of Damascus' residential districts," Kuralenko said, listing the affected areas.

"Residential districts came under shelling from 6.25 a.m. until 11.30 a.m. on February 27, explosions of 21 shells have been registered," he said adding colleagues from the U.S. center in Amman had been notified about the shelling.

On Monday Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama adopted a joint statement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria on February 27, obliging both sides to influence different political forces in the country to achieve a ceasefire.

On Tuesday, Russia's Defense Ministry announced the creation of a coordination center at the Russian Hmeimim air base with the aim to reconcile the warring sides within Syria. The center was set up in line with agreements reached by Russia and the United States to facilitate the negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition and to organize humanitarian deliveries.

Russia's aviation grouping has been delivering air strikes against the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria since September 30 at the request of Syria's President Bashar Assad.

Since 2014, the US-led coalition has also been delivering air strikes against militants in Syria and Iraq.
