Government reinforcements arrive in southeast Homs for Quraytayn offensive
On Sunday morning, the Syrian Defense Minister General Fahd Jassim Al-Freij traveled to the Homs Governorate's southeastern countryside in order to inspect the recently deployed reinforcements to the Maheen-Quraytayn front.
General Freij was pictured delivering a speech and interacting with the soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army's 120th Brigade of the 2nd Division in southeastern Homs.
According to a battlefield correspondent in Damascus City, Gerneal Freij's visit was meant to lift the spirits of the soldiers before they begin their 2nd phase of the Quraytayn offensive against Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS).
Previously, the Syrian Arab Army's 120th Brigade - backed by Dara' Qalamoun (Qalamoun Shield), the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), and Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade) - attempted to advance past ISIS' defenses and enter the ancient Assyrian city of Quraytayn.
However, the offensive proved unsuccessful, as ISIS was able to withstand the assault and reestablish control over Jabal Quraytayn (Quraytayn Mountains) after a fierce battle battle with the government forces.
The city of Quraytayn is strategically located in Homs southeastern countryside; it situated 100 km north of the imperative Tanf border-crossing into the Al-'Anbar Governorate of west Iraq.
In addition to its proximity to the Iraqi border, Quraytayn is also located near the ancient city of Palmyra in central Homs.
Capturing Quraytayn will help them weaken ISIS' defenses in eastern Homs and ultimately strike the city of Palmyra.
