Syrian Foreign Ministry says Turkish artillery shelled Latakia's outskirt in Syria
The Turkish artillery shelled Syrian border territories on Monday. One of the strikes hit the outskirts of the port city of Latakia where several people were injured, the Syrian Foreign Ministry reported.
"The Turkish authorities continue shelling villages on Atira mountain in the northern outskirts of the city of Latakia causing civilian casualties," the Syrian news agency SANA quoted the Syrian Foreign Ministry as saying.
"The government of the Syrian Arab Republic considers such actions to be a gross violation of international law and a crime against Syrian citizens and demands that the Turkish government give up the practice of violating Syria's sovereignty and respect norms of international law," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said.
Russian Defense Ministry Spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov said earlier on Monday that Russia had "irrefutable evidence" that the Turkish army was shelling the Syrian territory from large-caliber artillery guns.
The general demonstrated a video, which showed the Syrian-Turkish border. "This is a Turkish border checkpoint, which did not have any firing points a few months ago," Konashenkov said.
Konashenkov said that the Russian military had received from the Syrian General Staff the video shots showing the deployment of large-caliber self-propelled artillery pieces at one of the border checkpoints. The Syrian opposition has handed over a video depicting the shelling of the Syrian territory by the Turkish armed forces.
