Syrian troops liberate 9 settlements in Aleppo province — Russian General Staff

The Syrian government army has liberated nine settlements in the province of Aleppo in the past week, Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoy, chief of the main operations department of the Russian General Staff, told journalists on Tuesday.

"The government forces continue to extend the zone of security around the Kowaires airfield in the province of Aleppo and are developing the attack towards Idlib. In the past week, nine settlements have been liberated," he said.

He said the Syrian army was continuing its offensive along the entire frontline with support from Russian warplanes. Most fierce fighting were reported from the provinces of Latakia, Aleppo, Hama, Homs and Damascus' suburbs.

"Terrorists are sustaining considerable lossess," Rudskoy added.

Russian aircraft have supported the Syrian opposition by 17 strikes at the positions of the Islamic State terrorist organization north of Rakka over the past 24 hours, more than 150 militants have been killed, he went on to say.

The strikes were delivered to support the Ganim detachment making part of the Free Syrian Army, and the armed formation of the Democratic Forces, Rudskoy said.

Over 150 units of the opposition are fighting the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria, contributing to the Syrian government forces' offensive, Sergey Rudskoy told journalists.

"Actions of the so-call opposition against ISIL [former name of Islamic State banned in Russia] contribute to successes of the ground operation of the Syrian Armed Forces," Rudskoy said.

"More than 150 such units are currently acting in Syria," he said.

Syrian opposition provides Russian military with positioning data on terrorist facilities

According to Rudskoy, the Russian military maintain permanent contacts with the Syrian opposition, which is fighting against the Islamic State and which is providing positioning data on terrorist facilities.

He says part of the opposition — more than 5,000 people — is already interacting with the Syrian army.

"A permanent contact has been established and is being maintained with them. Opposition units are providing the command of the Russian aviation group with positioning data on terrorist targets, which are to be destroyed," Rudskoy stressed.

Russia will continue its efforts to consolidate the Syrian army and other groups fighting against the Islamic State, Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoy, chief of the main operations department of the Russian General Staff, told journalists on Tuesday.

"We are determined to continue our work to consolidate efforts of [Syria's] government troops and other groups fighting to liberate Syria from international terrorists," he said.
