Border between Syria, Jordan closed
Syria has closed the border with Jordan on Thursday. According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the Nasib checkpoint was "fully closed, and any attempts to use it would be regarded as illegal border crossing." The decision to this effect has been taken in response to Jordan's unilateral similar move on Wednesday.
Amman said it had stopped the operation of its checkpoint zone because of armed clashes near the Jordanian-Syrian border. No information has been provided on the possible date of resuming the work of the checkpoint. Damascus has placed "full responsibility for the economic and social effects of the move on the Jordanian side."
Meanwhile, armed opposition groups have said on Thursday they had gained control over the Nasib checkpoint. The Hawkes of the South coalition has claimed responsibility for the move. No official reaction has been offered by Damascus.
Jordan accommodates the greatest number of Syrian refugees who have fled the country because of the persisting fighting between the government forces and the armed opposition. Nasib was the only crossing point between Syria and Jordan controlled by the Syrian government.
