Russia transfers to Syria military equipment for chemical weapons transportation
In December 2013, Russia transferred to Syria off-road military vehicles, as well as armored vehicles for the delivery of Syrian chemical weapons to Latakia harbor. This said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Tuesday at a conference call at the Russian Defense Ministry's situation centre, focusing on the issue of fulfillment of tasks in the Mediterranean by the Russian naval task force.
"At present, the Russian side jointly with the international community is at the naval stage of ensuring safety of loading and transportation of Syrian chemical weapons to the place of its handover," he said, adding that the Russian president had instructed the Defense Ministry "to directly participate in ensuring safety of the process of destruction of Syria's chemical warfare potential."
"The Russian naval task force in the Mediterranean is involved in the fulfillment of this task," Shoigu said, asking the force commander, Captain Oleg Peshkurov, via video link to report on the measures taken.
