Chinese ship to transport Syrian chemical weapons is passing Suez Canal
China continues negotiations to assure arrival of its vessel to Cyprus, representative of China's foreign ministry Qin Gan said on Thursday.
"China's military ship, which participates in the mission to transport the Syrian chemical weapons, went to sea on December 31. China has been negotiating intensively governments of Egypt, Cyprus, Syria and other countries to assure its successful arrival in the destination," the diplomat said.
"Presently, the ship is passing the Suez Canal. Egypt's government allowed the passing, thus proving the entire international community supports the mission to transport the Syrian chemical weapons."
"The transportation by sea of the Syrian chemical weapons is a dangerous and complicated task, which requires coordination of efforts from the countries involved," Qin Gan said. "Thus, countries should be in close contact on the issue. As the Chinese ship arrives in Cyprus, it will coordinate actions with vessels from Russia and other countries," he said.
