China says agreement reached on shipping Syria's chemical weapons
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang says a multilateral agreement on escorting chemical weapons out of Syria for destruction has been reached. Qin told a daily news briefing that a meeting in Moscow between China, the U.S., Syria, Denmark, Norway and a joint mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the UN reached the agreement on Friday.
He said vessels from China, Russia, Denmark and Norway will ensure transportation conducive to regional security and in the interests of all parties. The spokesman said China attached much importance to the multilateral coordination meeting and played a constructive role in reaching the escort plan.
"China attached a high level of importance to the multilateral coordination meeting. Chinese defense officials and diplomats discussed military technical issues with other participants at the meeting, playing a constructive role by resolving differences and gathering a consensus," Qin said.
"China has always taken a fair and objective stance on this issue. Chinese military vessels were sent to participate in the joint mission to implement UN Security Council resolution 2118 and echo the call of the UN and OPCW to contribute to international and regional peace."
