Turkey approves extension of motion on use of force against Syria
The Turkish parliament on Thursday approved an extension of the government's motion to use force against the Syrian military, particularly since chemical weapons were used in combat.
The parliament originally endorsed the authorization for military action after a Syrian mortar shell hit Turkey's southern town of Akcakale and killed five people in October 2012.
The mandate for force mentioned the Aug. 21 chemical attack allegedly launched by the Syrian forces outside Damascus, where over 1,300 people were reportedly killed.
The motion called for all necessary measures to "stop and deter the Syrian regime from using these weapons."
Turkey, which was once an ally of Damascus but is now a leading voice against it, has purportedly provided Syrian rebel leaders with sanctuary.
