Russia claims Syrian opposition attempts to provoke foreign intervention

Russia possesses enough evidence that the Syrian opposition used reports about chemical attacks as provocation, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

"We've got enough evidence that reports about use of chemical weapons reflect the fact that opposition regularly stages provocations in order to trigger intervention," Lavrov told a meeting of the Valdai International Discussion held in Tver region, west of Moscow, the Russian capital.

The club's mission is to foster a global framework for the experts from the world to debate on Russia and to provide an independent analysis of Russia's role in the world.

Lavrov said the UN Security Council would examine those evidence along with a report submitted by UN inspectors who had investigated chemical weapons attack in Syria. "This is going to be found who has done this," he said.

Moscow expects its international partners would respect an agreement on dismantling Syria's chemical weapons arsenal reached by Russia and the United States on Sept. 14, he added.

Also on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who is in Syria, said the proof that the opposition used chemical weapons near Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Aug. 21 has been given to the UN experts who worked in the country.

Ryabkov met with Syrian top officials, including President Bashar al-Assad, for talks about the Russian-U.S. deal that aimed at ending the recent crisis in Syria.
