Kerry: Comments on averting US military strike rhetorical
US Secretary of State John Kerry has told his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov that his comments about Syria averting a US military strike are rhetorical and not meant to be proposal.
Earlier Kerry said Syrian President Bashar Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding his purported use of chemical weapons by turning "every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community in the next week". He made the remarks at a news conference with British Foreign Secretary William Hague in London.
He spoke after Russia urged Syria to put its chemical weapons under international control to avert military strikes. Speaking to Lavrov, Kerry also voiced "serious scepticism" when Lavrov offered to explore the idea.
He said the US would take a look at any serious proposal, but this could not be a reason to slow the White House's efforts to secure congressional authorization to use force against Syria.
