UN chemical weapons inspectors arrive in Lebanon from Syria

The team of UN inspectors, after ending their work in Syria, arrived in Lebanon on Saturday.

According to reports, from Beirut, the inspectors will head for The Hague, the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Experts will need about two weeks for determining whether chemical weapons were used in Syria. It must be understood that two weeks is the most favorable scenario. There is much work to be done - to conduct laboratory analyses of the samples taken in Syria and study the evidence of victims and witnesses, a source at the UN headquarters said. After that, experts will prepare a corresponding report for the UN Secretary General, who will present it to the Security Council.

Meanwhile, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane will report about the work of inspectors in Syria to the UN secretary-general. She negotiated with Damascus for the investigation into alleged chemical attacks.
