Syria's Assad pays surprise visit to hotspot near Damascus
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad paid a rare surprise visit to one of the main hotspots on the outskirts of capital Damascus to inspect one of the army units, according to state TV.
The visit to the Daraya suburb west of the capital aimed to mark the 68th anniversary of the Syrian army and boost their morale as they made advances on several fronts across the country.
The media office of the Syrian presidency published a photo of Assad with two soldiers and shaking hands with one of them.
Daraya has emerged as a main hotspot near Damascus over the past 28 months of crisis. The Syrian troops have been fighting for months in a bid to dislodge the Western-backed rebels.
Earlier, Assad said he was confident of victory against the rebels. "If we weren't confident of victory, we wouldn't have been able to carry on after more than two years of aggression."
"My confident in you is so big and I have a firm belief in your ability to carry on... with your national duties," he addressed the army.
