AL, OIC appeal to cease-fire in Syria during Eid al-Fitr
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Arab league (AL) appealed on Tuesday on forces loyal to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and rebel fighters to put down their weapons during the Eid al-Fitr for Syrians to celebrate the feast and perform the rituals in peace.
The two secretary generals of the OIC and AL, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and Nabil el-Araby, have made a joint appeal calling on all rival parties in Syria to cease fire and quit all forms of violence during the religious occasion.
While expressing their hopes that all warring parties in Syria would respond positively to their plea, a joint statement of the two bodies stressed there are still some obstacles on the way to reach a political solution to crisis.
Response to the appeal can also be an opportunity to enable humanitarian organizations to provide emergency aid to the affected areas, the statement read, asking all international and regional parties to support this request.
Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, another call to cease fire was rejected by the Syrian administration.
For more than two years, pro-government forces and rebels have been locked in a conflict that has been escalated into a civil war.
