Turkish forces fire teargas on Syrian smugglers on border
Turkish forces fired teargas on Syrian smugglers trying to cross the border on Tuesday morning, a military statement said.
Around 2,000 Syrians were warned in Turkish and Arabic while they were approaching the Ogulpinar border town in Hatay province, the statement said.
However, the Syrian group hurled stones at Turkish military vehicles despite the warning, and the soldiers had to fire teargas to disperse them, it added.
Separately, Turkish forces opened fire on another group of almost 350 Syrian smugglers on horses near the border.
Syrian smugglers, benefiting from two years of chaos in their country, have long been taking advantage of Turkey's 900-km borderline to trafficking oil and other goods.
Last week, a Syrian civilian was shot dead when Turkish border patrol returned fire to a group of illegal border crossers.
Turkey, with an open border policy, has been hosting around 500, 000 Syrian refugees.
