Kerry discusses Syrian humanitarian crisis with aid agencies
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday met with leaders of UN agencies and aid organizations to discuss ways to cope with the humanitarian crisis arising from the ongoing conflict in Syria.
"We are having a very difficult time being able to access people, move people correctly and protect people," the top American envoy said prior to his discussions with the aid agencies.
"So we intend to have a very solid, in-depth discussion today about creative ways that we can meet our obligations to human beings who are in huge danger and distress," he added.
Kerry visited the Zaatari camp, which houses about 105,000 Syrian refugees, on Thursday when he was in Jordan trying to revive the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
"I saw firsthand, as I have previously in other places, the dramatic and unbelievably moving ways in which people are separated from homes, from family; so many people murdered, killed, " he said.
Among those meeting with Kerry were UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and heads of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Food Program, the United Nations Children's Fund, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organization.
The raging conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has killed about 100,000 people, created more than 1.8 million refugees to neighboring countries and displaced hundreds of thousands more.
The Obama administration has pledged more than 815 million dollars in humanitarian aid, which consists of food, medical supplies, water and shelter, in response to the Syrian crisis.
