Hollande advocates political solution to end Syria crisis

French President Francois Hollande on Friday called on the international community to energize efforts to reach a political solution to end violence in Syria, but kept military options on the table.

"France will do its utmost to ensure that the Geneva conference succeeds. We believe, today, that the solution must be political but to uphold the political option we should never rule out the hypothesis of military pressure, in that case, the removal of Syrian arms embargo," Hollande said.

He noted that France wants to see an end to the embargo preventing the country from supplying weapons to the rebels. However, he said, France wanted to be sure that any arms sent to Syria "do not fall into the hands of groups who would in time turn them against us or use them to further destabilize the country."

In an exclusive interview with France 24, TV5 and RFI on Friday afternoon, Hollande said the Geneva conference, scheduled in June, was aimed at launching peace talks in Syria to prepare for a political transition without the participation of al-Assad.

On Thursday, Syrian president confirmed that an official delegation will attend the international conference over Syria.

For its part, the Syrian National Coalition (CNS) announced that it would not take part in the conference, proposed by the United States and Russia, without hammering out a political accord on a deadline for al-Assad departure.
