Syrian Guards Foil Infiltration Attempt
Syrian border guards foiled an attempt by an armed terrorist group to infiltrate from Jordan to Syria on Monday, SANA news agency reported.
The conflict took place close to Tal Shihab residential area in Daraa province. An official source in the province told SANA that authorities clashed with the group, killed and injured scores of them, adding that the others fled back to Jordanian territory.
There was no immediate confirmation to this information in other media. The Jordan Times, whilst not confirming this specific incident, reported on Tuesday that hundreds of foreign fighters were joining the rebels in Syria across the Turkish border.
Earlier reports said that on Monday militants sized a strategic checkpoint eight kilometers from the city of Aleppo, where the Syrian Army is conducting a counter-terrorist operation. However this information has yet not been officially confirmed.
Since March 2011, the Syrian conflict has claimed 14,000-20,000 lives, according to estimates by Syrian opposition groups. The West is pushing for Assad's ouster, while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in Syria saying the Assad regime and the opposition are both to blame for the bloodshed.
