Russia concerned with looming vote on U.N. resolution on Syria
Moscow has serious concerns over the possible vote on an U.N. General Assembly draft resolution on Syria, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
"Despite our and a number of countries' objections, a group of countries drives the situation to voting of a draft resolution on Syria on May 15," the ministry said in a statement.
Moscow accused that group of countries of opting the discussions in a close circle without taking into account the opinions of all U.N. members. As a result, the document remains biased and non-objective, ignoring Syrian realities, said the ministry.
"All responsibility for destabilization in the country is hanging on the Syrian government solely, while omitting any mentioning of illegal actions and violence of the opposition armed groups, who often use terror methods resulting in massive human casualties," the ministry said.
Meanwhile, the distinction between "good" and "bad" terrorists undermines international efforts to combat terrorism in Syria, Moscow warned, adding countries forcefully pushing the resolution lack desire to settle the conflict in a political way, which contradicts a recent Russia- U.S. agreement.
The agreement reached during U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's Moscow visit envisages an international conference on Syria with the aim to start an intra-Syria political dialogue based on the Geneva communique.
"No one in the world argues already that document has been the only platform to overcome conflict in Syria," the ministry said.
