Syria to see Brahimi as UN envoy only: statement
Syria's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that the Syrian government will deal with the UN-Arab League (AL) special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, as the UN envoy only since the AL is "conspiring against Syria."
"Syria has cooperated with Brahimi and will continue to do so in the context that he is a UN envoy only, as the AL is with a side conspiring against Syria and the league's role was ended when it terminated the mission of the Arab observers team led by al- Dabi on Feb. 12, 2012," the ministry stated.
Also, the statement said that the continuation of Brahimi's mission requires him to prove his neutrality, contending that the envoy's latest briefing at the UN Security Council was "far from the neutrality."
Brahimi told the UN Security Council Friday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's administration was "not quite ready to listen," and the opposition part had also failed to unite and form a credible political program.
