Russia sees AL summit decisions over Syria illegal
Moscow sees the decisions of the Arab League (AL) over Syria "illegal and void," the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
"In (Qatari capital) Doha, another anti-Syria move has been taken: a delegation of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces was offered a seat of the Syria's official representatives," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in an online comment.
On Tuesday, Arab leaders issued a declaration at a summit, granting Damascus' seat at the Arab League to the Syrian opposition.
Lukashevich noted that Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, head of the opposition delegation, asked the 22-member organization to increase support of the anti-government forces, including military assistance.
Al-Khatib proposed to establish a no-fly zone over northern Syria which has been mostly under the opposition control and called the AL to help the Syrian National Coalition to take over seats in the United Nations and other international organizations.
"The developments in the AL summit and the decisions made there cause puzzlement, to put in mildly. In effect, it means an open encouragement of the forces which place stake on military solution in Syria despite day-by-day pain and sufferings of the Syrians," Lukashevich said.
He added that Doha summit has also undermined efforts of the UN-AL special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi who has a mandate to facilitate contacts between the Syrian government and the opposition.
"Moscow is convinced that only political settlement, not destructive military scenario, could stop the bloodshed and guarantee peace and security for all the Syrians in their country. Russia keeps doing everything for that," Lukashevich said.
Syria has not been represented in the Arab League since November 2011, when its membership in the AL was suspended.
