Iran says never allow "foreign prescription" for Syria crisis
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Wednesday that Iran will never allow "foreign prescription" for the Syrian issue, semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting, Salehi said that although the situation concerning the Syrian crisis is very tense, Iran's proposals to settle the Syrian issue can be the only way to move out of the current situation.
"Syrian-Syrian approach" is the only way to overcome the crisis in the war-torn country, he said, implying talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups.
The Syrian people suffer from the crisis in the country and those who are persisting the conflicts should know that they will not be able to rule the country, which is "the sea of blood," Salehi was quoted as saying by Mehr.
Salehi made the remarks reacting to some speculations that call for toppling the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and forming a transition government.
A two-day meeting on Syria, with the participation of the representatives of Syrian government and some Syrian dissident groups, concluded in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Nov. 19.
The participants called for a ceasefire and an end to armed conflicts in the crisis-ridden country.
Later in the month, the Iranian foreign minister said the Islamic republic would host another meeting on Syria in the near future.
Iran is the major regional ally of the Syrian government in its conflict with the armed opposition groups.
"Iran stands by the Syrian people and government in countering the plots of the Westerners, especially the Americans and their allies in the region," Press TV quoted Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as saying on Wednesday.
Meantime, UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, who arrived in Syria on Sunday, held meetings with Syrian officials about possible diplomatic solutions.
Syria has been in unrest for over 21 months, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and injured.
