Brahimi calls for transition gov't and end to violence in Syria
UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has called for forming transition government with full executive powers that could pave a way for peace in the country.
Speaking at a press conference held here on Thursday, Brahimi said "We need to form a government with all powers which will assume power during a period of transition."
Brahimi reiterated that "this transitional period must not lead to the collapsing of the state's institutions."
The Algerian veteran diplomat called for bringing about an end to the violence in the war-torn country.
"Violence must stop and for the violence to stop there should be strong monitoring that could be provided by peacekeeping process," he said.
"The solution is by bringing Syrians points of view closer and if the Syrians were unable to do that by themselves, the international community, their neighbors and all people must help them," added Brahimi.
He noted that Geneva conference on Syria proposed several ways that could help in resolving the 22-months crisis.
"We are sure that the Geneva conference that was held in June last year has enough elements to put a plan that could end this crisis within the few next months," said the Algerian troubleshooter.
A meeting of the "Syria Action Group" in Geneva last June proposed a basic roadmap for a Syrian-led power transition.
Asked about proposal to send peacekeepers to Syria, he explained "some said that Brahimi is suggesting foreign forces in Syria; No, those are not foreign forces, those would only come after the concurrence of all parties."
He said that once there was an approval on a peacekeeping mission, it means that there is international consensus and "that is good".
He denied any Russian-American plan on Syria, saying "I wish if there was a Russian-American project. There is no Russian American project."
But, he warned that the political crisis in Syria could turn into a sectarian conflict.
"I don't think that you would disagree with me that the time is not on anyone's side and whosoever has the ability to help ending this predicament that has hit Syria, must spare no effort," he said.
Brahimi arrived in Syria on Sunday for a week-long visit aiming at ending the Syrian crisis. He held marathon meeting with the Syrian officials, including President Bashar Assad, and the opposition figures.
