Functioning of Russian bases, Israeli army in the buffer zone: situation in Syria

The Syrian armed opposition now fully controls the Latakia Governorate, where Russian military bases are located, a source in the Syrian province told TASS. He also stressed that the opposition has not invaded the Russian bases in Tartus and Khmeimim.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces overnight gained control of more territories in the buffer zone on the border with Syria, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said.

TASS has compiled the main information about the situation in Syria as of now.

Situation in Latakia

The Syrian armed opposition currently controls the Latakia Governorate, where Russian military bases are located, a source in the Syrian province told TASS.

According to him, the armed formations entered the territory of Tartus and Jableh when the opposition announced the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The source also noted that they did not invade the Russian bases in Tartus and Khmeimim, "which are functioning normally."

Israeli army actions

The Israeli army has moved beyond the buffer zone on the border with Syria near the Golan Heights, The New York Times reported, citing two Israeli officials.

According to them, the statements of IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi about the deployment of troops on Syrian territory are essentially an indirect confirmation of the presence of the Israeli army outside the buffer zone.

Israeli forces are establishing an additional security zone on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights, Dmitry Gendelman, an adviser to the Prime Minister's Office, said.

Meanwhile, the IDF took control overnight of additional areas in the buffer zone on the border with Syria, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said.

How situation escalated

On November 27, members of armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against government forces' positions in Aleppo and Idlib Governorates. By the evening of December 7, opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad had captured several major cities: Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Deraa, and Homs. They entered Damascus on Sunday morning, after which Syrian army units left the city. Assad left office and fled the country after intra-Syrian talks.
