Russia in dialogue with Turkey on Syria -- Kremlin

Russia is in dialogue with Turkey and other regional countries on Syria, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"We are in dialogue with Ankara and other regional states, including on Syrian affairs. Indeed, there is a very difficult period in Syria now, <...> due to instability," he said when asked about Turkey's role in the latest developments in Syria.

"Of course, it is very important to maintain dialogue with all regional countries here," the spokesman emphasized. "We firmly intend to do this, we will consult and analyze the situation," Peskov said.

On November 27, members of armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against government forces' positions in Aleppo and Idlib Governorates. By the evening of December 7, opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad had captured several major cities: Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Deraa, and Homs. They entered Damascus on December 8, after which Syrian army units withdrew from the city. The head of the Syrian government, Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, expressed his readiness for a peaceful transfer of power in the country. According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Assad resigned as president of Syria and fled the country, instructing for the peaceful transfer of power. A Kremlin source told TASS on Sunday that Assad and his family members arrived in Moscow, and Russia granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds.
