Turkey's president vows to eliminate IS militants in Syria in near future

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan promised on Monday to eliminate all the militants from the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia - TASS) in neighboring Syria in the near future, the Turkish leader said during his speech in Istanbul, which was broadcast by NTV channel.

"Turkey will destroy Daesh (the Arabic name for IS) soon. We will also establish security, stability and peace on the territories east of the Euphrates in the near future," he said.

Erdogan noted that Turkey supports not just the liquidation of terrorist organizations, but is also "applying major efforts to ease the effects of the humanitarian crisis that was triggered by the conflict in Syria."

Ankara intends to create safety zones in the neighboring country, the president said, so that "4 million Syrian refugees living in Turkey could return to their homes."

On January 15, after negotiations with US President Donald Trump Erdogan confirmed the intention to create a security zone in northern Syria. Ankara is ready to provide security on land, and the American side, in the air space above it. That said, Turkish Presidential Press Secretary Ibrahim Kalin noted that in case a security zone is created, Turkey will control it.

The discussion to create a safety zone in Syria started in 2013. Then the option to create a no-flight zone and a security zone on Syrian territory which could provide shelter to refugees was studied. Ankara regularly renews the subject.
