Russia to close ferry route between Crimea, Turkey — official
The Varyag ferry, which has served the route from Crimea's Sevastopol to Turkey's Zonguldak, from the coming year will be serving a route to Abkhazia, Sevastopol's Governor Sergey Menyailo told reporters on Thursday.
"As for The Varyag ferry, which last week brought our long-haul drivers from Turkey, we have agreed the route with Abkhazia," he said. "This variant will compensate for the closed route. I am helping the company in organisation of goods deliveries back and forwards. It will be loaded for return trips, otherwise it would not be profitable."
Managing Director of the Peleng Company, which owns the ferry, Dmitry Vinnikov told reporters the talks with Abkhazia's government finished a week earlier.
"As Turkey behaved aggressively, we decided to terminate fully our relations with it," he said. "We plan supplies of our products from Crimea to Abkhazia. We may serve consignments from the sodium carbonate plant, from Titanium, or grain. From Abkhazia we may deliver fruit and vegetables, and other food products to substitute those formerly supplied from Turkey."
He said the number of trips will depend on the cargo, he added.
"We also consider routes to Egypt and Syria, and that depends on logistics," he said.
