Moscow sees NATO-Russia Council meeting as failure of Russia isolation policy
The holding of the NATO-Russia Council meeting testifies to the failure of the Western countries' policy to isolate the Russian Federation, Russia's Permanent Representative to NATO Alexander Grushko said Wednesday.
"I think that this is a recognition that the project dubbed 'isolation of Russia' failed. It is evident that without Russia it is impossible to solve or regulate any international problem," Grushko told the Rossiya 1 television channel.
He underscored that NATO countries realize that they can't "keep isolating themselves from real processes in the sphere of security."
"This plays against the interests of not only global security, but also the alliance itself," Grushko said.
The NATO-Russia Council held the first meeting in two years in Brussels with participation of heads of missions of all 28 states members of the North Atlantic alliance on Wednesday. Russia was represented by envoy to NATO Grushko.
The meeting lasted two hours more than planned. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the reason for that was a frank and serious discussion. He said the sides held different views and the meeting did not remove deep differences between them. But, Stoltenberg said, meetings in that format will be continued.
Grushko said "Russia is not against holding a new meeting of the Russia-NATO Council, but only when there is a real agenda."
