600,000 migrants banned from entering Russia
Russia's Federal Migration Service banned entry for 600,000 foreigners in Russia, migration service's chief Konstantin Romodanovsky told Russian President Vladimir Putin at the presidential countryside residence on Tuesday.
"We banned entry to more than 600,000 foreigners as of now," he said, noting that most of them are citizens of the CIS states.
As many as 17.7 million people arrived in Russia in the previous year, 12.4 millions of them "came to find a job or earn some money" in the country, Romodanovsky said.
"They are those who tried to get a patent and a job permit to find a job and those who tried to work illegally for earnings," the migration watchdog's director said, noting that "40% of foreigners work legally and 60% work illegally, violate rules of stay and work beyond the frame of law."
Forty-two laws have been enacted in this sphere for the last two years with half of them seeking to curb illegal migration, Romodanovsky noted. "I believe that there is some positive effect, as we have found a mechanism that counters illegal migration, particularly illegal labor migration," he said. Specific amendments are being introduced in legislation seeking "not to encroach on or complicate the position of foreign citizens" in Russia, but "to find violators" and prevent them from making similar violations in the future.
