A NATO Forward Integration Team (NFIT), from Joint Force Command Brunssum, visited Poland from 26-31 January 2014. as part of continued support for exercises, Assurance Measures and NRF planning in countries along the Eastern border of the NATO Alliance.
Led by Brigadier General Torben Dixen Møller, JFCBS Director of Management, the team of 12 subject matter experts in areas ranging from logistics to legal affairs to exercise planning visited multiple military headquarters and military training facilities to gain greater situational awareness and assess a range of host nation military capabilities and support infrastructure.
From Krakow in Southern Poland to Multinational Corps Northeast in Szczecin, the NFIT met with Polish military leaders and subject matter experts at various levels to share information and collaborate on future military operations in the region.
A continuation of the NFIT fact finding missions that started last year with visits to the Baltic States, the NFIT to Poland had new level of focus and attention for all participants due to a variety of missions and operations under development such as Assurance Measures, the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) and Exercise Anaconda 2016.
"We had a very successful mission here in Poland with outstanding support from our Polish colleagues," said Brigadier General Møller. "From North to South, our team saw an impressive array of facilities and infrastructure that will enhance our ability to plan and execute a more robust exercise training schedule that supports Assurance Measures, the NATO Response Force and the Readiness Action Plan. The NFIT also plays a key role in further development of plans for the VJTF, reception bases for command and control and the pre-positioning of supplies and equipment which were all topics discussed at the Wales Summit last year."
For Commander Giuseppe Porta, JFCBS J4, the Poland NFIT visit gave him a new perspective on Poland's military host nation support capabilities.
"The host nation support available in Poland is solid and impressive," said Porta. "We found a high level of host nation planning for future exercises and support operations and this visit increased our collaboration with out functional expert counterparts here in Poland. This increased coordination and mutual support is important as we adapt our NFIT mission focus from implementing immediate assurance measures, which has already been done, to sustainment of assurance measures and continued development of the NRF and VJTF."
