Moldova's opposition will refrain from use of force to take power — Socialists leader
Moldova's Party of Socialists, which along with other opposition forces is demanding early elections, will never resort to the use of force to take power in the country, the party's leader, Igor Dodon, said on Monday.
"Our protest partners are pushing us towards a force scenario but it is not the way out of the situation. The West, which is sponsoring Moldova's authorities, will allow no revolutions," Dodon, who controls the biggest faction of 24 seats in Moldova's 101-seat parliament, told a videoconference.
"Not a single revolution in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has ever taken place without the West's backing. They won't let us take state institutions," he said.
Nevertheless he pledged to keep exerting pressure on the authorities. He cited opinion polls demonstrating a dramatic fall in the ruling parties' ratings. "In case of early elections, Socialists and Our Parties, both dubbed by the authorities as pro-Russian but which are as a matter of fact pro-Moldovan, will score the majority of votes," Dodon stressed.
Over the six years when pro-European parties were in power in Moldova, the number of those who support the idea of integration with the European Union has dropped from 70 to 35%, he noted. "Confidence in the authorities has shrunk dramatically. It is becoming ever more difficult for us to restrain people from the use of force," Dodon said.
More to it, in his words, discontent with the authorities has grown to a point when the left-wing opposition has consolidated with the right-wing opposition represented by the Dignity and Truth (DA) Civil Platform which favors integration with the European Union. "We have different views on the methods of struggle but we share a common goal - early elections," he stressed, adding that the presidential elections will be the closest opportunity to provoke parliament dissolution. "Opposition will do its best to block" these presidential elections by means of a large protest action.
