Russian experts to check Georgian farm export for phytosanitary compliance
Specialists from the Russian state consumer rights agency Rospotrebnadzor will arrive to Georgia in the next few days for phytosanitary control of Georgian agricultural products allowed to be supplied to Russia, Georgia's National Food Agency said on Friday.
"Starting from May 26, the list of items allowed for export from Georgia to Russia has been expanded by a whole range of plant products of high phytosanitary risk," the agency said, referring to exports of washed and pre-packed potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, eggplants, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, date plums, kiwi fruit and berries.
Russia banned the import of wine, mineral water and agricultural products from Georgia in 2006 due to quality issues.
The supplies of Georgian mineral water were resumed in May 2013, followed by the resumption of wine exports in June and a short while later, of products of low phytosanitary risk like tea, bay leaf and dried fruit. The export of Georgian agricultural products to the Russian market will be resumed in October 14.
