Russia to remove missile, artillery control systems from Mistral ships

Russian specialists will dismantle from the helicopter-carrying amphibious assault ships Mistral all Russian equipment, including combat information and control systems and also missile and artillery control systems, a senior source in the defense-industrial complex has told TASS.

"All Russian systems will be removed and brought back to Russia," the source said. "This concerns all Russian systems and also weapons and other hardware installed on them. I am referring to all ship-borne combat information and control systems, systems controlling missile fire, artillery complexes and the helicopter landing control module."

The dates for bringing the equipment back to Russia are still being agreed, he said.

Earlier, a source within the system of Russia's military-technical cooperation told TASS a group of specialists was scheduled to go to France in September to remove communication and control ships of Russian manufacture for their further use in other Russian naval ships.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Francois Hollande on Wednesday achieved agreement on terminating the contract for the delivery of two helicopter carriers of the Mistral class, concluded in the summer of 2011. As the Kremlin said, the two leaders agreed that Russia would get a compensation for the money paid under the contract and also on the return of Russian equipment and materials. After that France will be free to use the ships at its sole discretion.
