New regiment set of S-400 air defense missile systems arrives for Russia's Baltic Fleet
A new regiment set of Russia's most advanced S-400 long-range surface-to air missile systems has arrived for the Baltic Fleet under the defense procurement plan, the Fleet's press office reported on Monday.
"The new S-400 Triumf air defense missile system has arrived at its permanent base in the Kaliningrad Region from the Kapustin Yar practice range in the Astrakhan Region after its initial live-fire tests were conducted successfully," the press office said.
The S-400 regiment set will be fully deployed to protect the airspace of Russia's westernmost region by the end of next week, the press office said.
The S-400 Triumf mobile multi-channel air defense missile system is designed to defend vital military facilities and infrastructural installations and features better capabilities compared to its S-300PM predecessor.
Russia's S-400 Triumf is the latest medium-and long-range surface-to-air missile system that went into service in 2007. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, and can also be used against ground installations. The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km.
Each S-400 surface-to-air missile system can engage 36 targets at a time. The S-400 is the sole system that can selectively operate with more than four types of missiles with different liftoff weights and the firing range, thus creating multi-layered defense.
