Sweden extends participation in NATO Libya mission
The Swedish parliament Friday agreed to extend Sweden's participation in NATO-led operations in Libya by three months, DPA reported.
As a result, five JAS Gripen jet fighters are to be deployed for reconnaissance missions, compared to the eight that Sweden contributed in April to help patrol a no-fly zone approved by the United Nations Security Council.
Sweden was also to contribute a marine boarding force.
The decision was backed by a broad majority in the legislature comprising the four parties in the centre-right minority government and the opposition Social Democrats and Greens.
The opposition Left Party and nationalist Sweden Democrats opposed extending the mission.
Just as under the terms of the previous parliamentary approval, Swedish jets are not allowed to attack ground targets.
Sweden is not a NATO member.
