Libya opposition figure to visit White House

Libya's opposition leader will meet with senior US officials in his first visit to the White House on Friday, dpa reported.

Mahmoud Jibril will meet with President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, and other top officials, the White House said Thursday.

Jibril is the president of the Libyan Transitional National Council, which is leading the rebellion against longtime leader Moamer Gaddafi....

Jibril is making his first visit to Washington. He had previously met with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at a meeting in Europe about Libya in March.

The White House did not say whether Obama will meet with Jibril. Jibril met with members of Congress on Wednesday, including Senator John Kerry, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Commitee.

The opposition is seeking greater international support, including a supply of weapons to fight Gaddafi's superior forces, and recognition. The US has pledged 25 million dollars in non-lethal aid to the opposition, but has stopped short of recognizing the body as the official government of Libya.
