Russia, China aim to broker Middle East peace settlement
Russia and China have agreed to coordinate their activities in an effort to stabilize the situation in Northern Africa, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced during a joint press conference with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.
"Russia and China are deeply concerned about the situation in the Middle East and in Northern Africa. It may result in global turbulence. We have agreed, therefore, to use our countries' capabilities, to coordinate activities to prevent further unpredictable consequences," Lavrov stated. He also noted that Russia and China's joint position was that people of all countries should have the right to determine their own future.
Yang Jiechi, in turn, expressed concern over the situation in Libya. "We believe that the Libyan crisis should be settled through peaceful means. Consequently, we believe the primary goal at the moment is an immediate ceasefire," the Chinese official said.
