Islamic State to use Libya as gateway for attacks in Southern Europe -- media
The militants of the Islamic State terrorist group are going to occupy the territory of Libya and use it as a beachhead for attacks all over the Southern Europe, reports The Daily Telegraph with reference to revealed letters written by the group's supporters.
According to the edition, the document was written by an IS agitator recruiting extremists in Libya since Muammar Kaddafi's overthrow and the beginning of the internal military conflict.
Jihadists are going to flood Libya with IS militants from Syria and Iraq that will try to cross the Mediterranean Sea passing off as migrants, the document states. This data was provided by the British counter-extremist foundation Quiliam.
According to the organization, fighters are going to use weapons from Kaddafi's arsenals including British machine-guns and precision rifles seized by different military groups in Libya.
Because of the emerged threat the former head of the British Secret Intelligence Service John Sawers supported the possibility to send land troops to Libya. According to John Sawers, it is worth discussing intervention in Libya and Syria and deciding whether to choose Iraq's and Afghanistan's scenario or to abandon the idea of international intervention. Both approaches bear great risks. At the moment British Armed Forces participate only in airstrikes against IS positions in Iraq.
