Churkin warns about threat of terrorists' getting access to chemical arsenals in Libya

Russia's Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin on Wednesday warned the United Nations Security Council of a "real threat" that terrorists may get access to arsenals of chemical weapons in Iraq and Libya.

He urged the Security Council of speak up on that matter to give to understand that the use of poisonous substances "will have consequences."

The Russian diplomat stressed that growing strength of terrorist organizations, first of all, the Islamic States, was a matter of serious concern. "We already have access to weapons of mass destruction - chemical weapons. There are numerous evidence of the use of such weapons by terrorist militants in Iraq and Syria. There is a real threat they might have access to Libya's and Iraq's chemical arsenals," Churkin said. "We believe the Security Council must decisively speak up on that matter and give to understand that the use of chemical weapons by anyone will have consequences."

Earlier, the Russian United Nations ambassador said that Security Council had turned down Moscow-initiated darft resolution concerning the threat of production and use of chemical weapons by terrorists and armed groups in Syria, Iraq and Libya. In his words, during the discussion of this draft the Russian delegation had encountered "double standards" on the part of several members of the United Nations Security Council.
