Japanese SDF holds drills in defending disputed islands
The Japanese Self-Defense Force has allowed journalists to witness a training drill at the Amami archipelago off the coast of southern Japan. Japanese media say the Defense Ministry is considering strengthening its defense capability in the south.
Thursday's drill involved more than 13,00 personnel, eight airplanes and four vessels. It dealt with a hypothetical scenario in which the islands were taken by a foreign force. The drill was part of an exercise that began earlier this month and ends on Tuesday.
The exercise aims to show how the SDF would protect a group of remote islands in the East China Sea. Tensions in the area are rising over Japan's claims to China's Diaoyu Islands in the area.
