Un to draft strategy of countering afghan drug threat.
The 58th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is under way in New York, is to draw up a strategy of countering the Afghan drug threat, Yury Fedotov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, said in a RIA Novosti interview Thursday.
He recalled that Russia had proposed that an international conference be held under the UN aegis on September 24 to discuss political settlement in Afghanistan and the country's economic revival. The deputy minister added that it was necessary to work out a system of guarantees of the non-interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs, the effort that must involve the UN Security Council.
The UN must continue to play a co-ordinating role in the long-term political settlement and socio-economic reconstruction effort in Afghanistan, said Mr Fedotov.
