20 killed in two bomb attacks in Iraq's Baghdad
A total of 20 people were killed and 47 injured on Tuesday in two bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, as Islamic State (IS) group claims the deadly suicide attack, security sources and IS online statement said.
One of the attacks occurred in Shaab district when a roadside bomb detonated at a crowded market and was followed by a massive explosion of a suicide bomber who blew up his explosive vest, leaving 15 people dead and 37 wounded, said Saad Maan, the spokesman of Baghdad Operations Command (BOC).
According to Maan, the suicide bomber apparently was a female in accordance with the remains of the attacker's body.
Meanwhile, the Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the massive twin bomb explosions in Shaab district, saying that one of its suicide bombers hurled hand grenades on Shiite paramilitary members, known as Hashd Shaabi, at the marketplace before detonating his explosive vest, according to the statement, of which the authenticity could not be independently verified.
The IS statement denied the suicide bomber was a female.
Separately, a booby-trapped car detonated in Rasheed district in southern Baghdad, leaving five people killed and 10 others wounded, another police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Iraq has been currently witnessing a wave of violence since the IS group took control of parts of Iraq's northern and western regions in June 2014.
Earlier, a report by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) estimated that 741 Iraqis were killed and 1,374 others wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflicts across Iraq in April.
